Indian Railways has launched a new e-booking service, making it easier for pet owners to travel with their dogs and cats on trains. This service is designed to simplify the travel process for pet parents by allowing them to avoid the hassle of waiting in long queues at parcel offices. According to India Today, the new facility is available for travel in first-class compartments, offering more convenience for passengers planning to travel with their pets.
Key Features of the Pet Travel Service
Travel with Pets in First-Class AC Compartments: Pet owners can now book their tickets online via the IRCTC website, ensuring that they can bring their pets along on journeys. Pets can travel with their owners in first-class AC compartments, including the four-berth and two-berth coupe cabins, provided the booking is made under a single PNR. Regular booking charges apply.
Options for Small Pets: Small pets, such as puppies and kittens, which can fit in a carrier or basket, are allowed to travel in any class after booking. Larger pets are restricted to specific train routes and must be transported in dog boxes available through the parcel office.
Booking Process: To book travel for a pet, passengers need to complete the following steps:
- Book your ticket online through the IRCTC website and carry a printed copy.
- Ensure your pet is vaccinated and carry a record of vaccinations.
- Obtain a certificate from a veterinary doctor that confirms your pet’s breed, gender, and color.
- Arrive at the luggage office at least three hours before departure to complete the booking process. Note that one PNR allows only one pet per passenger.
Important Travel Guidelines: Pets are not permitted in AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, or Sleeper Class compartments. Additionally, if a pet causes disturbances during the journey, railway staff has the right to request its removal from the compartment.
Contact for AC First-Class Travel: For those traveling with pets in AC first-class cabins, it is advisable to contact the divisional railway manager or general manager for assistance, as such requests are given priority.
